Global access to cultural heritage: 3D modelling of monuments and artefacts

Three-dimensional imaging has long been a valuable tool for recording and research in the heritage sector, but in recent years the cost of producing 3d models has dramatically fallen and websites, such as have Sketchfab.com, have made it possible to easily share 3d models with a global audience. In particular, developments in Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry have opened 3d modelling to anyone with a camera and computer. In this talk I will present a variety of 3d models of archaeological sites and artefacts from the Highlands, revealing how they were made and how you might use this technology.
Hugo Anderson-Whymark is the Curator of Early Prehistory at National Museums Scotland, Edinburgh. He is an active field archaeologist, currently co-directing excavations at Tresness, Sanday, Orkney, and a specialist in prehistoric stone tools. His research interested span the Upper Palaeolithic to Bronze Age, but focus on the Neolithic.
