‘Whisky - friend or foe in Gaelic tradition’
Talk by Hugh Cheape. A dram is a byword for Highland hospitality and Gaelic tradition tells us that the reputation of whisky has evolved from medicine - as Aqua Vitae or the 'Water of Life' - to symbol of resistance against excessive taxation and opposition to government. Praising whisky - or 'dis-praising' and blaming it - became a favourite song theme, especially while 'illicit distilling' could make a profit.
Hugh Cheape moved from the National Museums Scotland to Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, UHI, in 2007 to set up the postgraduate masters degree programme, MSc Cultar Dùthchasach agus Eachdraidh na Gàidhealtachd ('Material Culture and Gàidhealtachd History').
