Further Information:
The Dun is an Iron Age fortified homestead, having similarities to both roundhouses and brochs. It dates from the second half of the first millennium BC and suffered two episodes of burning, with reoccupation, continuing into the later 1st century AD.
It stands on a terrace on a hillside with a commanding view of Strathglass. The land belongs to Forest and Land Scotland; the site was discovered in advance of felling and was excavated in 2013 by Steve Birch of Ross and Cromarty Archaeological Services. It was designated a scheduled ancient monument by Historic Scotland in 2016.
Our focus when visiting the dun will be twofold. Firstly, we will look at the structure in its landscape setting, hear about the results of the excavation, and consider what we can learn about life in the area in the Iron Age. Secondly, we will discuss the problems which arise in trying to conserve such a monument, where visitor numbers are insufficient to justify large-scale expenditure on its upkeep, but where the archaeological community, and the local community, are keen to prevent it from becoming so overgrown that it can no longer be properly seen. The attached photographs show how much vegetation has encroached upon the structure in just a few years since the excavation; SHA is working with FLS to try to find a solution.
