Skye & Lochalsh Archive Centre Open Day [SL] {A95}
24 September 2022
Starts: 11:00
Ends: 15:00

As part of the Highland Archive Service, the Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre in Portree is responsible for archives relating to Skye and Lochalsh. The records date from the 17th century to the present, and are strongest from the mid-19th century. The Elgin Hostel was designed by architect James Shearer (1881-1962) and opened by the Duke and Duchess of York in 1933. The building was commissioned to accommodate boys attending secondary school in Portree, continuing as a residence until 1980. The Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre occupies the original round recreation room and adjacent spaces.

Visitors will be able to see into the purpose-built strongroom, learn about the conditions in which archives are kept and see a display of material from across the centuries.

Part of Doors Open Day.
