Canadian Lumberjacks in Kiltarlity [IN]
12 October 2017
Starts: 19:30
Ends: 21:00

Melynda Jarratt talks about her new book on aspects of the Canadian lumberjacks around Beauly in WW2. Venue: Phipps Hall, Beauly.

Free. Children welcome with adults. Wheelchair accessible.

The author is the granddaughter of Canadian Pat Hennessy who came to Scotland to  cook for the lumberjacks cutting down Boblainy Forrest for the war effort. Trunks of letters were recently found in the attic of  the family house in New Brunswick which related to Pat's time in Beauly  and later when he kept in touch with the many friends he made in Scotland. This find started Melynda on visits to Scotland to find out more about the people and places in these letters. She has gone through many archives and camp diaries to find more on the Canadian Forestry Corps and its people.  During the research she has met up many descendants of these Lumberjacks and a group of them will be visiting Beauly and the Phipps Hall.
