E20 - Guided walk to Strath Brora Townships of Greeanan and Fearach [SU]
29 September 2019
Starts: 10:30
Ends: 16:00

The high township of Fearach, at the head of Loch Brora on its NE side, was cleared during the latter stages of the notorious Sutherland Clearances in the early 19thC.  Greeanan, on the other hand continued to be habited into the 20th Century (and will be the site of a community excavation in May 2020) and is also the site of the last Strath Brora school (1887-1963).

We will see the buildings of two townships, one cleared and one inhabited into the 20th century, and hear about some of the fascinating historical references we have regarding their inhabitants (MHG19358, MHG11528, MHG32074). We will also see the remnants of the earlier Bronze/Iron Age landscape of hut circles and clearance cairns (MHG11016, MHG11017). And the scenery overlooking Loch Brora and Carrol Rock is stunning too! Level 2 walk, with a steep start and walking over rough ground. Meet at Brora Heritage Centre. This walk is weather dependent, so phone if in doubt.

Free/Donations welcome. Children with adults welcome. Bring a packed lunch. Dogs on leads welcome.
