The township of Ledoch, on the SW side of Loch Brora, was cleared during the latter stages of the notorious Sutherland Clearances in the early 19thC. However, a much earlier landscape of Bronze/Iron Age hut circles, clearance cairns, burnt mounds and the scant remains of a broch exists here too. Following the Clearances, a mid-late 19thC fish hatchery was established here, too.
We will examine all of the archaeological remains in the area, spanning c4,000 years.
And the scenery overlooking Loch Brora is stunning too!
In the event of bad weather, the walk will take place the following Sunday. Please phone if in doubt.

Talk by Dr Iain A. MacInnes
The Highlands are often omitted from much of the history of the Scottish Wars of Independence, in large part because it is often seen as a border conflict. But this is an oversimplification. The north was, at various times, a battleground for forces of both sides. Northern forces provided notable contributions to campaigns fought elsewhere in Scotland, and further afield. And popular views of the war also tend to focus particularly on its first phase under Wallace and Bruce (1296-1328), but little understanding exists of that which followed (1332-1357), and the importance of the north to this conflict. This talk will, then, look to address some of these issues. By focusing in particular on Ross and Sutherland, it will consider two important medieval earldoms, their lords, and their people, and analyse their involvement in the conflict, as well as the impact of the war on this region and its people.
Venue: Collegiate Church Tain
Cost: £5. Part of St Duthac Book and Art Festival. Bookings and further information on Eventbrite.

“Am Fasgadh” (The Shelter) is the Museum’s collection facility incorporating the collections storage and conservation, housing over 12,000 items. Founded by Isabel Grant in 1935 on Iona, the collection today represents the rich and varied culture of the Highlands and Islands from the 17th century to recent times. The emphasis is on rural and domestic life, with a vast range of artefacts including furniture, household goods, agricultural and forestry equipment, crafts and trades, Traveller and sporting items.
Wander at will on a self-led tour of the Store and the collection. This is a working store and so there are not many labels, so be sure to talk to the staff and volunteers on each floor. They will be able to answer any questions and give you more information about the objects. There will also be a “Find the coracle” trail for children. We have two full size coracles in our store, and there will be several very small ones hidden for people to find!
