Post-Festival Event - Scottish Salt Symposium [SU]
16 October 2021

A two-day Symposium in Brora, the most northerly coal-fired sea salt manufacturing centre in the UK, will bring salt historians, archaeologists, and enthusiasts together to celebrate this vital but little-known Scottish industry. On Saturday, Professor Chris Whatley, our keynote speaker, will start off a stimulating programme of talks covering the latest archaeological and historical research into the manufacture of sea salt, concluding with presentations by artisan salt makers operating in Scotland today.  On Sunday there will be field trips to the historic sites of the Brora salt pans and associated industrial landscape and experimental salt making in a replica coal-fired salt pan at the Brora Heritage Centre. See the website for further details including booking information. Venue to be confirmed. Cost £20, includes light lunch and refreshments on Saturday.
